So as the engine heats up excess coolant flows into the overflow tank. As the engine cools down, the coolant contracts creating a partial vacuum in the radiator top tank. Coolant then flows in reverse and refills the top tank. The overflow tank will have MIN and MAX marks on it. The level should be above min when the engine is cold.
